What really grinds my gears: migraines

Posted on Updated on

I am a migraine sufferer. Ever since I can remember. I have met other sufferers who have it worse but regardless the level, migraines SUCK!

Another thing that sucks is my memory but I do believe I recall the innocent but infamous youth moment that put me on this path of migraines.

Picture this, Montreal,1975 or possibly later… my memory sucks. I was a yoot 😋 that much I know. A buddy and I were at a local park .. Unsupervised.. A couple of adult characters were passing a soccer ball around and either they invited us to join or we asked. I don’t recall. My memory sucks. Either way it was probably a stupid thing to do given our parents weren’t around. But alas.

Anyway, here we are tossing the ball around and at one point one of the adults sent the ball up in the air and as I was getting ready to head the ball he yelled out at the top of his voice ‘Noooooooo’. It was too late. I can’t remember what I did yesterday but I can remember the pain I felt. Like a ton of bricks hit my forehead.. I think nowadays they call that a concussion. Anyway I truly believe that moment in time forever changed things for me in the migraine department.

It’s really nonsensical:

  • I can go to bed feeling great and wake up with a migraine.
  • I can go weeks without a migraine and then I can have migraines for days.
  • More often than not if the migraine isn’t triggered while I am working out, it happens in the hours after I am done.

Case in point. Yesterday after basically 1 year off the gym due to covid… the restrictions in our area were lifted so with all the excitement in the world I went off to the gym. Smartly, I knew I had to pace myself and I did. A one hour workout.. In any case, that is the limit. I worked out during my lunch hour. By 7pm.. I started to sense a migraine was brewing. By 10pm as a preemptive move I took a Tylenol. At 430am… I was awoken by a massive migraine. Serenity now.

I have read tons of literature and quite frankly it doesn’t come across as promising. These products that offer relief from migraines have a list of possible side effects. So help with one thing, introduce a list of other pblms? I’ll pass.
