Literally that one answer could be my entire post but it won’t be 😁. We see it in professional sports all the time. I don’t think I need to name names. So it should not come as surprise that it happens in youth sports as well. This season is the first season where I have not been involved in youth coaching in any capacity. I have had a great summer so far 😋. It doesn’t mean though that I am completely out of the loop. I still follow but to a lesser degree. There is this one team in our club that ‘on paper’ is having a stellar campaign. They are undefeated. Will probably end the season undefeated. Will most likely win the championship. And will in all likelihood head to nationals. So? Are they really that good a team? I don’t really know. I have not watched one game of theirs. I don’t have any reason to. However, just like on paper they look to be a great team, this paper also helps paint a different picture as well. A small time spent looking over all their matches so far and you can’t help but notice a certain pattern. Or i should say a certain player. Some simple math shows that if you subtract said player from the team and subtract all her goals this team would have a drastically different record. Night and day. She is not a home grown player and one could argue that if she had not come to this team they could have gotten another player of her calibre. Maybe. But impossible to predict that their record would be as good as it is right now. Clearly without her it wouldn’t be. Here’s what having such a player does though. This team’s record is getting noticed by other talented players currently on other teams who may be struggling. These players will show up next season with the hopes of being selected so they can be on a better team. Eventually the home grown players will be replaced with these out of club players and the team will become a bonafide powerhouse just like their 2 year older sibling sisters.
The irony with all this is that you will hear coaches and technical directors talk about ‘development’. That word is as useless as ‘transparent’. Ultimately it never really is about development. It’s about winning. Do you think that the coach of this talented player who has factored in every single game would sit her a game or more knowing that they have not yet clinched first? No. Way. That’s because it’s not about development. It’s about winning.
Without a doubt I take pure satisfaction that England not only will not be bringing it home, they failed to also bring home 3rd place. All tournament long I have been tweeting that they have really not shown anything. You can read my previous post but at the end of the day what I wrote proved to be correct. They were in an easy group and then landed in an easy bracket but yet failed to take advantage of that. Their only tough opponent was 🇧🇪 and they promptly lost to them 2x; the latest being today for 3rd place. As a matter of fact today they should have been massacred. The early and many chances squandered by 🇧🇪 was staggering. After putting out some FACTS after the Sweden game on twitter some rando whose handle is ‘blessed’ felt the need to name call and ask me where Italy is. What a brilliant comeback. Don’t bother tweeting me back and challenging what I wrote and tell me why I am wrong. Instead tweet the goddamn obvious. Yes, Italy is not there but that does not mean I am not entitled to an opinion and it doesn’t take away the fact that what I wrote was reality.
FACT: 🇮🇹 did not qualify
FACT: England did
FACT: 🇮🇹 did not win the world cup this year
FACT: England didn’t either.
FACT: the end result is the same. Neither will bring it home.
The majority of England’s goals were set pieces. Kane had 6 goals, 3 of which were penalty kicks and one went off his heal when he was not even paying attention. Yet he’ll win the golden ball. Against Sweden he had one chance and sailed it left. Against 🇭🇷 he had one chance and couldn’t score. In the 3rd place match against 🇧🇪 he had one chance and couldn’t score. See the pattern? They mastered set pieces but forgot that they also have be able to finish during play as well.
So back to this ‘blessed’ rando on twitter. July 11th was the best day ever. And I decided to let him know that.
Yes I will admit that I revelled in the moment. I couldn’t help myself. BTW that’s the joker slow clapping. And my comment that he knows my cousin is in reply to his Joey from friends meme he sent me. Four days later and he has no rebuttal. I wonder why. He can dish it but can’t take it. I am sure I won’t hear back from him. I also took the opportunity to stalk his twitter feed. Somehow I am not surprised at what I saw.
Wow. Two for one special today.. Another post… this one was supposed to happen last weekend. In mid may our company announced that we would donate to a ‘feeding America’ ‘feeding Canada’ charity. It would be by putting up miles. Our objective Is 5000 miles between the two locations; USA + Canada. Initially I wasn’t planning to participate but a week in a colleague asked why I wasn’t and that I should. He was right. My wife and I already walk every night why not put those miles to good use. At that point another colleague of mine was well in first place of our team Canada group. Then I happened 😂… within a few days I leap frogged him into first and ever since then we’re in a heated competition. Initially I was only putting in walking miles but then he took up biking to and from work so I added biking on weekends only. He then took some time off and momentarily leaped ahead of me as he racked up insane biking miles. So I upped the anty and started to bike mornings (when I feel like) for 30mins as well. It gives me a good 4 miles. I am not going to bike to and from work. I also now bike multiple times a day during the weekend and continue to do my nightly walks with my wife. Over a week or so ago it was opened up to family members as well. We definitely need help making the objective. My wife in short order put herself already in 3rd spot! 👍
That’s me in both screen grabs sitting in 1st (the first image is as of today).. Yes, I am having fun changing up my name. Will do It a couple more times before the end. This event will run until the end of August and to be honest although I will not let a younger colleague beat me I can’t wait for this charity thing to end!! Lol.
On two separate occasions yesterday I found myself involved in interesting twitter interactions. Both soccer related. After the England/Sweden match I tweeted the following:
To which a guy with the twitter handle ‘Blessed‘ replied…
I followed that up with…
…and although u don’t see it his reply was ‘right back at you’ .. Using Joey for obvious reasons.
Here’s the thing my initial reply was going to be a lot different. Originally it was ‘wow. Brilliant comeback. I hope you didn’t hurt yourself coming up with that one. ‘ but I decided to take the high road (notice the hashtag). Look, even if England wins it and in all likelihood they will be in the final, it changes nothing about what I wrote. To this point it is accurate and the truth. Unfortunately…
At every tournament whether euro or world there is always a team that is destined. Maybe this year England is the team and they will bring it home. Their only real challenge will come in the final and you know what they say .. At any given match on any given day anything can happen. To this point they have not impressed. Yesterday my buddy disagreed that Sweden was not a strong opponent. He said that England did a great job shutting them down. I totally disagreed. Later he admitted that he has big money on England winning it all. Well, There. You. Go.
The second incident happened later in the day after I watched my daughters team beat the first place team in youth soccer (16s). The league has this MVP system in place where opposing coaches pick an MVP (2 for the winning team) from the opposing team at each game. The selections for our team chosen by the other coaches was in my opinion somewhat dubious. This same coaching staff last year after a match picked an MVP from my daughters team who was actually in a leg cast on the bench injured!!! 😂. So excuse me if I have my doubts about their picks. Of course I tweeted this knowing very well one of the coaches would see it. We follow each other on twitter. We are certainly not drinking buddies as I am old enough to be his father but I think we have a mutual respect for each other. His response was that the MVP system is a joke and that no one really stood out on my daughters team. So they picked who they picked. Basically he said they picked the best of the worse, I guess. Some time later the other coach, who I don’t know, replied by writing ‘its better that I don’t respond to this…’ and then went on to give his two cents… isn’t that a response though? 😂
Anyway his main argument, sarcastically, was that they then should have awarded the MVP to the player that blocked the most shots inside the 18 but that would have been hard since it was all 11 of them doing that. First off, I think blocking shots is part of the game, no? Any time you can help your goalie shouldn’t you? You see it in hockey all the time. Secondly, there is a player in the starting 11 whose job is literally to block shots and stop them from going in the net; the goalie. How can u possibly take a guy who doesn’t realize this seriously. 😂 .. Then very late during the night their club assistant technical director also chimed in. He too regards the MVP system to be a joke. At the end of the day though who made this system a joke? Wouldn’t that be the coaches? So instead of taking the high road and being better than the ‘joke’ they aren’t. Instead they are just part of the pblm.
As you can see.. Not much fighting going on here… lol.. We all have opinions and that’s great and our right but I don’t waste too much time constantly engaging to the point where it will just inevitability degenerate into something stupid.
Oh and I won’t even get into it in this post but I love when the first line of defense from coaches is about their job being about ‘development’. So you can’t be bothered to make a fair and intelligent pick for MVP because Ur too busy ‘developing’ players. Lol. Jesus.
A few weeks ago I watched iJustine unbox a oneplus and in that special edition box were 5 cases. Five! One was carbon fibre and it was gorgeous. I already have a case for my KEYone but decided to see if a carbon fiber one exists. Not a skin, I have tried that. A case. I didn’t find any but found one I thought I would like and so I ordered it last Sunday. I am a prime member so expected delivery on Tuesday. On Tuesday the package was delivered to my wife’s workplace (my choice) and at noon it was in my possession. When I opened the package however it wasn’t what I ordered. I look at the labelling on the actual package which was covered by intelcom’s other labelling and it was addressed to someone else. So I got the wrong package. I called intercom express, told my story and was placed on hold for ten minutes, was then told she couldn’t reach the driver and that someone would call me back. By 3pm the person who received my package called my wife to bring her up to speed that intelcom was being difficult about this whole mix-up. By 5pm I called intelcom again, got the same woman, was put on hold for a good 10mins, was told again that driver could not be contacted and that someone would call me back by latest noon on Wednesday. Surprise! That call never happened. I then decided to get amazon involved and chatted with someone and the whole experience got me NOWHERE !! Ok so sometimes online chatting Is not the way to go. On Thursday after more failed attempts with intelcom we find out from the person who had my package that u can actually call the carrier and request you be transferred to Amazon and they will do it for you. He was able to get a refund and a new package delivered. That’s what I did. I landed that same woman and when I told her I wanted to talk to an amazon representative to file a complaint and get a refund she quickly asked if I would give them a chance to fix this first. I told her no. I told her I recognized her voice and I had no interest being put on hold and going through the ritual from the other day. So I got connected to an amazon Rep and within 15mins I got a refund, I got to reorder my case, I got to choose 1 day delivery and she waived the 7$ charge and I was guaranteed delivery by Friday. I was also given a free month on my prime membership. On Friday at around 1pm since there was no indication at all that the package was on its way a call was made to intelcom express who said they didn’t receive any package yet. A call to amazon confirmed that and I was then told that unfortunately chances were I would not get the package Friday. Given that, I told the representative that the delivery address needed to be changed to my home address since the address they have is a business one and no one would be at the office on Saturday. She changed the delivery address for me. Within 15mins of our conversation I got a notification from intelcom that my package would be delivered with the next 3hrs. Say what? How is that possible? I assumed the one I re-ordered. Nope. Wrong. It was the original one which they went to get from the person who got it in error. One hour or so later I got another notification that my other package would be delivered within the next 3hrs. So by Friday evening I went from having zero cases for my KEYone to two. Oh and BTW I did get a refund … so one case was a freebie! 😀👍… so was this case in the end worth it?
For now I will say yes. It’s fairly light weight which is important to me.. Rubberized and the back is a clear plastic which allows me to showcase the BlackBerry logo. On the negative side, it’s clear plastic and so FINGERPRINTS!!!! UGH. What was I thinking!
I wish the buttons weren’t covered. I think after some use i will cut out the rubber off the buttons. Should make things easier. Although it’s not too bad right now.
BTW intelcom express does not have a good reputation … do some googling and it will confirm this. There is actually a petition out there that wants amazon to stop using them as a courrier.
Alright. I have waited a week but now it’s time to vent.. So potential spoilers on the way. I think the post title says it all. Literally if you blinked you missed the Hulk in Infinity War. He may have been on screen for about a minute and I think I am being generous.
This was me after the movie and although the ending was all sorts of WTF… I was also disturbed and disappointed with how the Hulk character was handled.
For 2hrs19mins and 30 secs or so I was wondering when I’d see the Hulk again. So here’s my take on this…
I am assuming the lack of screen time in infinity war has to do with the amount of screen time Hulk had in Ragnarok. What isn’t acceptable though is how little time he had. As well, how Hulk was treated.
The whole thing is messed up. So I am supposed to believe that because in those whopping 30secs he lost to Thanos that somehow Hulk was afraid to come out and ‘play’ again. On the one hand in Ragnarok we get to see a Hulk that is starting to talk although child like so.. It’s feasible to buy into him being scared to face Thanos again. On the other hand, the INCREDIBLE Hulk, a SUPER HERO, the mightiest of heroes is scared??? Say Whattttt?
Let’s get this straight… up to this point Hulk was able to take out the Abomination, handled Thor, was able and willing to take on the wolf and surtur in Ragnarok but now he refuses to take on Thanos because he ‘lost’ in a maybe 30sec encounter? BULLSHITTTTTT!!!! In the meantime the likes of all the other heroes, even Black widow and a teenaged spiderman take on Thanos and family without hesitation. So Hulk is painted in a cowards light? Unacceptable!!!
What I hope for is that in Avengers 4 Hulk is given a bigger role and that payback will be a bitch!!!!
Last night as I was walking past one of our local soccer fields it got me thinking about my recent years at the soccer club I spent a good 15 years at. Could my crossing paths with the current technical director of this club who literally destroyed my passion for youth soccer and coaching have been a blessing? In a crazy way I think it was. I mean at the time the shit went down obviously I didn’t see it that way but three years have passed and so in retrospect this revelation has actually come three years too late. You see, rather than just call it a day three years ago I actually returned and last year was on the coaching staff with the technical director himself. I mean think about this. Imagine getting fired from a paying job only to return to work for free for the person that FIRED YOU!! That has to be the dumbest thing anyone could ever do and yet I managed to do that. I even had someone tell me straight to my face ‘what are you thinking?’ ..I wish he had said it differently. Like ‘what is wronggggg with youuuu?’ a la Rajesh from big bang theory. Atleast I would have gotten a kick out of that.
Anyway, leaving this toxic environment has been the best thing to happen to me. I lead a stress free life. I mean let me rephrase that. I lead a stress free soccer life. Life outside of soccer still has its stresses. However I’ll take the life stresses over this toxic environment and all the shit it brings any day of the week. Now I simply live vicariously through my daughter. I go watch her play and stay away from everything that is toxic. Including some of the parents.
The million dollar question. I will start off by stating that i am a Juventus supporter. Given the 3:0 result of the first match, i will also admit that i never imagined that Juventus would pull off the comeback they did yesterday. Surely, the Roma result served as inspiration/motivation but i didn’t see it happening. Especially without Dybala. But it did. What did they get for it? Nothing. It was indeed a scandalous ending. Of course, depending on which side of the fence you are on you will either say it was not a foul or it was a foul. Here’s my take on this.
Given the corruption that exists in the world of soccer, starting with FIFA, why is it so hard to think that a plan was in place to ensure Real advanced? Especially considering the stunning defeat of Barcelona v. Roma. Why is this unimaginable? Could you imagine having both Real and Barca out of Champions league? Ousted by 2 Italian teams? Never. So why not have a plan in place? I am sure just like me, no one thought Juventus would score 3 goals and leave Real at 0.. but what if?? eh? what if? It’s not too hard to tell a referee that should this situation come up, to look for an “opportunity” that ensures Real advances. That opportunity came at the 93rd minute. Trust me, had the scoreline been 1:0 or 2:0 for Juventus that late in the game that call would not have been made. Had the scoreline been a draw or Juventus down that late in the game, that call would not have been made. The call was made because of the scoreline. Plain and simple. The question isn’t whether it was a foul or not; it was. The right question is ‘would that call have been made under any other circumstances?’ the answer is no.
It’s a shame. given the performances of both teams for both games combined the correct call should have been to have these two teams head into extra time.
Not sure how I forgot this but worth mentioning.. Although it’s more an android/app annoyance than a KEYone. What’s with apps like YouTube and Facebook refreshing and taking you back to the top of the feed when you return to the App after it was minimized?
Side note: I swore that early yesterday @BBMobile liked my tweet for this post then the ‘like’ was gone later in the day. Hopefully I didn’t piss anyone off. Interestingly enough my battery is getting battered this morning. Some sort of revenge? Lol. I kid.
I should also mention that I am a die hard fan and look forward to the KEYtwo.
Ok so this post was supposed to happen yesterday and then life got in the way. So why not wait 2 more months and do a ‘year later’ review? Well, I don’t think anything will change in the next two months. Atleast I don’t think so. If things change then I will post another update.
No huge revelations will come out of this post. Just my experience.
I guess the best way to approach this is a pros and cons list.
The phone is gorgeous. Beautiful looking and great quality. BBmobile needs to continue to make quality BlackBerry phones. None of that DTEK series nonsense.
The physical keyboard is pure awesomeness. I cannot do without a pkb. I just simply love the feel of the keys. I am a complete superstar writing on the KEYone.
The added features that come along with this great pkb like flicking words onto screen. Swiping back to erase words. Using the pkb as a mouse. Last but not least the fact you can create shortcuts both long and short for each key. I have so many shortcuts set up. So, so convenient.
The split screen feature. Most of the time I use it because I am watching a YouTube video but want to be able to scroll through my twitter feed. BB10 was far superior at this but heck atleast we got something.
The App ecosystem. I put this out here because almost every single BB elite out there that is pushing old time BB users of OS7 and BB10 use this as the main argument to jump on the blackdroid bandwagon. Personally I am not huge on apps. I have the few I use regularly but that’s about it. Instagram, twitter and FB are the main three with a small handful of others. What I will say is that, yes, it is exciting, I guess, to always have these apps getting updated on a regular basis.
Battery life. Amazing that I don’t have to bring my charger with me. Ever.
Cons (or annoyances)
Apps freezing up and getting the dreaded ‘App has stopped working’ window. So annoying. I don’t recall ever experiencing this with BB10.
I feel like I need to throw this one in. The Facebook App on android is pure unadulterated garbage. 99% of the time it is sluggish as shit. Thank God I rarely use it. Unfortunately the few time I do use it, it’s pure hell.
There are times when u press on either the circle, triangle or square and it takes a few cracks before there is a response. The square seems to be the worse.
General lag in responsiveness. It doesn’t happen often but when the phone slows down, it slows down to a crawl and it is the WORST!! There have been times that it was so bad I wanted to launch the phone across a room and into a wall. I have not done it and will never because I can’t bring myself to damaging such a beautiful phone 😀. I recall one time wanting to show an iPhone user friend of mine a video and it took so long to fire up he commented that we would have already watched it on his iPhone. I had no comeback. I mean how can I possibly convince people to join the blackdroid world when shit like this happens.
Battery life. Yes, this is in my Cons list as well. Although I don’t need my charger, battery life is not like it used to be. Seems to have changed somewhat since the last OS update. When it comes to my phone usage during my work week nothing has changed. I rarely use my phone during my work day yet my battery drains at a faster rate than in the past. I start my day at 6am and finish work at 430pm. There was a time when my battery would be in the low to mid 80s. Now it’s low 50s and at time in the 40s. Sure I reboot and get maybe one good day but then it’s back to what seems to be the new norm of low to mid 50s. Mostly the android system is chewing up all the battery life. I get that over time batteries can’t keep their charge like they used to but it hasn’t even been a year yet. Something has to change here. Why do I have to be forced to reboot my phone frequently to hope to get better battery life?
That’s all folks. For the most part my experience with Android has been good but at this point I can still argue that it’s no BB10. At some point I imagine I will no longer be able to say that.
BlackBerry decided to go after Facebook (WhatsApp, Instagram) this past week for patent infringement. Seven to be exact. Just as quickly as the news came out, came the articles and people accusing BlackBerry of being ‘patent trolls’.
A patent troll
Let’s face it folks, BlackBerry is far from being a troll. They own tons of patents and intellectual property that is still in use today.
I won’t lie. This comes as a surprise and I think it’s pretty ambitious. The once Goliath of the industry, now the David going after Facebook; one of today’s Goliaths. BlackBerry clearly feels they have something otherwise I doubt they’d attempt anything. I suspect this has been years in the making and I am sure they’re well prepared. I am no expert or lawyer but on the surface it seems this should go in BlackBerrys favor but you just never know. Time will tell. This could drag on forever.
I think the founder of WhatsApp is a good example of what a troll is.
Takes a dig at #apple:
But doesn’t look at his own backyard to make sure it’s tidy:
100% accurate. WhatsApp has been blatantly ripping off every feature BBM has put out.
All hail BlackBerry. Fingers crossed this will come out in their favor. BlackBerry has been on a good streak lately with lawsuits!
